The news: Social media giants are facing another wave of intensifying global scrutiny. Digital rights group Eko filed complaints against Meta with data protection officials for its targeted advertising practices in Europe, while UK regulators opened an investigation into TikTok for alleged inappropriate use of children’s data.

Eko filed complaints in Spain, Germany, and Norway claiming Meta violated the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) after finding evidence of disregarded user requests to opt out of targeted advertising and data collection.
